MEC Day 1: Favorite Book

"In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit."

My favorite book from Middle-Earth. So many, so many to choose from! The Silmarillion, The Return of the King, The Children of Hurin.... oh, the list is endless! Yet, I do have a favorite. So, I'll tell you which one it is. Ready? *grins*

The Hobbit was the first book by J.R.R. Tolkien that I ever read, and even though I absobloominglutely love LOTR, this book will always hold a special place in my heart. This was one of the first fantasy stories that I came across, and it was probably Bilbo's fault that I love epic adventures so much now. I mean, seriously, giant spiders, great eagles, a gold-hoarding dragon, mountain caverns, water rides... what's not to like?

  1. Okay ... confession ... I don't love the Hobbit. I mean, I like it, and I fully intend to hunt down and purchase the extended edition once it gets out so I can watch it ... but there are a few elements that don't jive with me ... such as when Bilbo lies to Gandalf about how he escaped the goblin caves ... and the big fight they get in over that rock that Bilbo finds in the Dwarves' mountain and Thorin doesn't want him to have it because it's a family heirloom. The rest of the book is wonderful and delightful, especially the Riddles in the Dark ... but I can't confess loyalty to the book.

Of the books I've read, my favorite would have to be Return of the King. I love how all of the despair comes to a head and all the heroics, and how they all win, despite the sheer improbability of it. I even enjoy reading the Desolation of the Shire. I just like how everything comes to a head.
