Following God's Plan

{A guest post by Aidyl of Noveltea}

Love. Marriage. A beautiful, happy home. Laughing children.

I would guess a fair amount of people dream of these things. Me included. For almost as long as I can remember, I’ve thought of being a mother as one of the most amazing things in the world. Having a precious little child clinging to me, belonging to me, being mine is something far greater than I can imagine. Plus of course having a husband to love, a house to take care of and all that wonderful kind of stuff.

And yet I’m not focusing on that at this point in my life. Why? Because God has called me to something else for now, and first and foremost I am God’s child. If I waste my time trying to figure out who I will marry, or even dreaming of it a lot, it’s simply that, a waste of time. And my time equals my life.

Getting married is not my goal in life. I think a lot of people view “older” non-married people as being non-fulfilled (not that I’m “older” yet). It’s almost as if people believe they haven’t actually experienced life until they’ve gotten married. That’s just plain untrue. As hard as it may be to hear this, not everyone gets married. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t lovable or that they aren’t as good as those who do get married. Nor does it necessarily mean that they’re too picky or any of those other commonly thought ideas. Sometimes it simply means that marriage isn’t God’s plan for them. While I do sincerely hope that being a wife and mom is in my future, I don’t want to look back at the end of my life and realize I wasted precious, productive years waiting for something that is in God’s hands.

Do you realize that no matter where you are in life, God has a special plan for you? If we're not focused on what He wants us to be doing, then we're focusing on the wrong thing. This is true for if you’re supposed to be married and you’re avoiding it, or if you’re supposed to be doing something else with your life, and all you can do is dream of being married.

Some of my best friends have lived across the world from each other, yet through God’s workings, they began dating (or courting, whatever word you prefer to use) after having had very little contact for several years.

Anytime I get worried about who I will marry (Oh my goodness, what if when I’m busy with doing what God wants me to do, Mr. Maybe-Future-Husband gets impatient and marries someone else?) I remind myself of their story. Both of them were where God wanted them, doing what He had called them to do. When the time was right, God worked it out for them to get to know each other.

God doesn’t need us to work out His plans for Him, He needs us to find peace in following His leading. Is it always easy? Of course not. But it’s worthwhile and makes life so much better. Remember: God doesn’t promise that we’ll all get married before we’re 30, that we’ll all have children or that we’ll all have our dream home. But He does promise that He has an amazing plan for our lives: ‘For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.' ~ Jeremiah 29:11

I don't know about you, but I'm excited to see what God has in store for my life!

  1. This was beautiful, and so true! It's so easy to waste your life away waiting for marriage when God has plans for you NOW. That's something God has to remind me all the time.

  3. Thank you, Aidyl! Excellently put! I love how you wrapped up everything with Jeremiah 29:11. God HAS a plan for each of us, and we must trust Him to direct our paths. We may not know what He has in store, yet He does.
